Professional Learning through Formative Reading Assessments

Ferris Elementary conducted schoolwide reading assessments at the end of the fall term to better understand student progress and identify patterns in reading development. These assessments provided valuable data on foundational skills, comprehension, and fluency across grade levels. By looking closely at the results, teachers were able to gain a clearer picture of where students are thriving and where additional support is needed.

After analyzing the assessment data, several trends began to emerge that highlight both strengths and areas for growth in our reading instruction. These trends are helping guide instructional planning by informing decisions about targeted interventions, small-group instruction, and whole-class strategies. Using this data-driven approach ensures that instruction is responsive and aligned to students’ current needs.

As part of our school learning story, these findings will be shared with staff at the January meeting to support collaborative planning and professional dialogue. Sharing trends across grade levels allows educators to learn from one another and build consistency in instructional practices. This collective focus on reading growth reflects Ferris Elementary’s commitment to supporting student learning and improving outcomes for all learners.
