Evidence of Student Growth with SEL Skills
Ferris conducted DESSA Mini assessments of a randomly selected group of students in December 2020 and December 2021. These assessments provided a general sense of how students are doing with SEL skills (including coping skills). This data showed a general trend towards more students falling in the typical range for SEL skills in 2021 (60%) when compared to 2020 (41%). Although this is only one source of information, it does indicate that explicit SEL instruction at Ferris is likely having a positive impact on students. Through focus groups in June and September of 2022, we plan to explore what specific factors lead to student strengths in SEL. The more we know about this, the more we can work towards created these conditions for all students.
