Evidence Post : Filling In The Gaps with Heart

What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus?

At Ferris Elementary School, our resource and classroom teachers reviewed both the SPARK and classroom assessment data to identify areas of need and plan targeted literacy support for students. Through collaborative discussions and ongoing analysis of student progress, staff were able to determine which literacy strategies would best support student growth and achievement.

What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen?Using this data-informed approach, teachers implemented focused literacy strategies to specifically support our emergent learners. These strategies included targeted small-group instruction, guided reading, explicit teaching of foundational reading skills, and opportunities for repeated practice and comprehension development.
What does the evidence tell us so far?By aligning instruction with assessment data, staff worked to ensure that emergent readers received timely and responsive support to strengthen their confidence and success in literacy.
To what extent are the actions making a difference? At Ferris Elementary School, a comparison of our fall and spring SPARK and reading assessment data shows encouraging growth in student literacy achievement across the school. The data indicates that the number of students identified as emergent readers has decreased over the course of the year, reflecting the impact of targeted literacy instruction, early intervention, and ongoing support provided by classroom and resource teachers.
How will we move forward accordingly?

In addition, the assessment results demonstrate overall improvement in the comprehension skills of our students. Through the consistent use of school-wide literacy strategies and focused reading instruction, students have shown stronger ability to understand, analyze, and engage with texts. These gains highlight the effectiveness of our collaborative and responsive approach to literacy learning at Ferris Elementary. Our goal is to continue providing collaboration time for staff to carry on this import work school-wide with consistency.
